Install Sun's JDK from Blackdown as a .deb, or Kaffe, or SableVM, or
gcj, and it will work.

I think this is documented in gdm somewhere, but I don't have it
installed here. I agree the GNOME sysadmin guide should discuss this.

On RH /etc/profile.d/ is only executed by /etc/profile, which is only
executed by bash. If I change my shell to zsh, all of the environment
variables in /etc/profile* are ignored.
