.bash_profile not run when using graphical login

Really?  Doesn't do anything useful for me.

Oh.  Okay, there's something funny going on between this old keyboard
and Ubuntu - doesn't work in console mode either.  Funny, I would have
thought I would noticed that long since, though it's true this is part
of the ever-changing project machine parts pool.  :-/

Okay, further investigation is in order.  I wonder if I have enough
spare parts to get another model M working...
