I can't help you with PPPoE as we have PPPoA over here but I can help 
you a little with getting some more help.

You need to tell everyone what system you are using (ubuntu from what 
disk and when updated), what modem you are using (and perhaps the 
service provider) and what architecture you are using (i386, amd64 or 
powerPC)  this will help people help you.

It's also a good idea to google for general references (ubuntu 
references are a little thin on the ground, debian references will 
surfice) and tell people what you have tried so far or the answer might 
be RTFM or a link to http://www.fuckinggoogleit.com/ always an 
embarassment ;-) but one that can be avoided.
