The msttcorefonts package, rebuilt in Ubuntu, worked swell for me.
It's the same version that I see in universe's pool, but for some
reason I filed the local build as though I had had to get the source
from elsewhere. Oh, that's it! There's no source in the universe
pool, just the deb. Okay, I'm not going crazy after all. :-)
Of course that's only an answer for that specific set of fonts, but
MS's uncharacteristic generosity in releasing those fonts semi-freely
has succeeded in making them almost essential for browsing many sites.
