it probably doesn't directly apply to your problem, but some older
desktop/laptop had to use apm instead of acpi to get a proper
poweroff/shutdown (simply add the word "apm" in the file
/etc/modules). But that was in systems where there was no acpi,
which I don't think is your problem here.
