KVM issue

This has been an issue for many distros and there seem to be quite a
few variables at play. The kernel, the version of Xfree86, the type of
mouse attached to the KVM, etc.
http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+KVM+mouse+problem&start=0
The first 2 page of results show a whole slew of different cases.
I had this problem with RH8, RH9, FC1 and now with ubuntu.
CTRL+ALT+F3 (or any other console) then CTRL+ALT+F7 would usually take
care of it for me under RH but this doesn't seem to work any longer
for me. Unplugging my mouse from the back of the KVM and plugging it
back in again does resolve the condition (but who wants to do that a
dozen+ times a day?).
The reverse case was also a problem in that all the extra mouse
buttons and wheel would stop working on my win2k or winXP boxes when
going back and forth. The simplist way for me to deal with all this
turned out to be using VNC 95% of the time and then only going to the
console as needed (which it turns out isn't often). This actually
works out well since I can also cut-n-paste back and forth quite
easily.
Freenx and nxserver look like very promising replacements for VNC but
they don't allow you to recover sessions consistently so I am left
with VNC for the time being.
Good luck with this one.
