I'm not sure what's the behaviour in ubuntu but in debia it's ok:

koke at ababol:~$ ifconfig
bash: ifconfig: command not found
koke at ababol:~$ sudo if (<TAB> <TAB>)
if        ifconfig  ifdown    ifnames   ifup
koke at ababol:~$ sudo ifconfig
lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
