new install

I've downloaded the ubuntu 64bit and the i386 and have
tried both version but they both seem to hang on
detecting hardware ..They hang on the part of sd_mod 
loading module for scsi support..

So I then tried installing it without loading the
sata_sis and I got all the way through the install and
after rebooting it hangs when it detects the sata
drives..

Not sure how to fix this or if I can fix this?
