Quoting Ed Sutherland <digital at twcny.rr.com>:

Obvious way is to install C++, GNOME development tools, Anjuta or KDevelop and
follow books published in:
     http://developer.gnome.org/doc/books/
There is another, easier way:
     1) download FreePascal and Lazarus from
            http://www.freepascal.org/
            http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/
     2) follow a book, published at
            http://www.freepascal.org/docs.html
You'll get the same results at much less work. You'll be able to use all books,
dedicated for Delphi, because Lazarus is using the same ideas as Delphi 5.
