I'm on dialup here, and had similar issues with configuring ppp, using
pppconfig. For what it's worth, everything works fine with the applet
once I make sure the user is in the groups
dip dialout
Type ` groups ` to check which groups the user is in, and
adduser youruser nameofgroup
to add - then logout/login to make the change take effect
