Of course, you can always set up squid (or another proxy) on your local
machine, and configure it to send requests for remote IPs to the "real"
proxy.

Then you point http_proxy to your local proxy.

PS: Apologies if you get this more than once: I'm fiddling with my
e-mail set-up. I've recently become disillusioned with the Fedora
Project's idea of community, and am looking to see if Ubuntu can give me
