Slow login from GDM

Can you login on first virtual terminal (press Ctrl+Alt+F1; to get back
press Alt+F7)? How long does it take? 



If it works fast, try logging in from GDM screen, and while the system
is doing this, switch to VT1, login as root, and run ps. It will show
you running processes - this might give some idea what is going on.
