I did some investigating this morning and found that there is a version
mismatch between the breezy xorg server and the binary MGA driver from the
Matrox site. Some googling turned up this page:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-78288.html
The post from _cato on 10-31-2005 explains how to solve the problem: fetch
and unpack the xserver-xorg-driver-mga package, copy the included mga_drv.o
into your active system, and restart X.
This seems to work for both 16-bit and 24-bit depths.
Also note that I have VGA outputs, I don't use DVI.

The difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no
difference, whereas in practice there is.
