Using Breezy/Gnome 2.12.1 here, too.
Sound preview in Nautilus does not work at all. It won't preview mp3
(despite gstreamer "mad" plug-in has been installed, so that Rhthmbox
can play mp3s), it won't preview OGG (as you pointed out, that's rather
hard to accept), it won't preview WAV files.
In Warty it was working better (wav worked) and it would even preview
the sound track of video files ! :-)
Gnome has it's own multimedia infrastructure, Gstreamer. Common sense
would have you think that Nautilus would use it to preview audio/video
files, but no. Go figure.
I just saw that Gstreamer 0.10 has been released, and it seems so much
better than the current 0.8. Hopefully it will be used in Dapper, and
Nautilus will use it for previewing multimedia files.
If you can preview mp3, it's probably that you manually installed some
package in the past that had mp3 support for one reason or another.
Maybe you installed mplayer, or mpg123 or sox or something else... only
you can know ;-)
