Scilab working for anyone?

I've tried getting a functional scilab installation, but am failing
miserably so far. The package in multiverse gives me a terminal with an
unreadable (tamil?) font and I can't find a way to change it (all google
throws up are people with the same issue and no answers). Trying to
compile 3.1.1 stops with the config script unable to find X /which is
patently wrong; I have the development files needed and other stuff
using X libs compile fine).

Anyone have an idea?
