Note that a 'runlevel three start up' won't do what you would expect on
Fedora/mandrake et al.

Debian runs X in runlevel 2 by default- if you want a non-graphical login
the easiest way would be to disable the *dm (probably kdm in your case).
Of course if you want to spend time learning to customise your runlevels,
feel free ;-)

One way to do this is to replace /usr/bin/kdm with "false" or "goaway"
or whatever you like, in the file

/etc/X11/default-display-manager

Actually Peter Lieverdink pointed this out a while ago, but maybe you
didn't have time to read that post <grin>.
