Everyone else seems to have covered the basics.. All I'll add is if
you want a good set of instructions on the web site side of things I
highly recommend the Ubuntu guide to LAMP servers (Linux Apache MySQL
PHP), makes the whole experience much easier.
Also if your planning on setting up a blog type site Word Press is
bloody brilliant and they also have excellent Doco.
umm for a photo gallery I recommend Gallery2
