Breezy on laptop slow and unstable

I just installed the savage driver from XFree86-4.3.0---the same I
used with Debian Woody (backported) and now image viewing with
gqview is fast again and stable (and there's always a cross in the
foreground of the middle of the display, that can not be shown with
a screenshot[1]). But using gthumb is still quite unstable with
GNOME. Viewing fullscreen kills gthumb---but not with XFce ... Now,
viewing videos doesn't work at all anymore :-(. How can I further
track down the problem? Where else could I ask? I really need a
stable laptop (that is amongst others able to show videos from a
beamer presentation).

BTW: I had the same driver (nv) problem with Hoary on my desktop.
Installing an older version of the XFree86 driver fixed it halfway, too.
