FWIW I am not your "typical home user" but I am also not (presently) a
system administrator managing a fleet of servers or anything like that.
I just use ubuntu on my home system for a variety of reasons. I don't
even have a gmail account and I don't chat much in gaim. But I did miss
this mail functionality because I am on dialup and my ISP limits the
size and number of my outgoing mails and my secondary provider (the
folks I mostly use for email) has had lots of reliability problems. So
back when hoary came out and I was having these problems oneday I set
my outgoing mail server to "localhost" just to see what woudl happen.
It worked! So I lived with it happily for many months and advised my
adventurous friends (those who were also running various flavors of
linux - like the teenage high school girl, or her craft hobbyist
mother) to do the same if they had problems. This also has the upside
of allowing one to get pretty much immediate feedback if there is some
problem with delivery.
They don't know what "localhost" is they only know I told them this.
And I didn't know at first why this didn't work with breezy. I also
didn't know a thing about setting up postfix; although it is an easy
few clicks one has to actually know about it - and know "web site" is
the (very unintuitive) setting most appropriate to -a home user on
dialup- who just wants to be able to send emails to their friends
without having to depend on their (possibly unreliable) isp.
