no sound at all.. just static

This box has never had a sound card before, but now I need one.

I've bought a SB Audigy LS, which is detected according to lspci

0000:00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy LS

I've played with alsamixer to no avail. I've also followed the detailed 
instructions at:

I've been through https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and no joy.

All I ever get is static (loud), including the test at 
System/Preferences/Multimedia set to either OSS or ALSA. Just static.

Should I be reconfiguring? something like dpkg-reconfigure ??? if so what package?
Any cluestick would earn my eternal gratitude.
