Is it really read only or is it writable? It appears to be writable since you can save stuff to it. Did you unmount it before removing it? The minimum you need to do is a "sync" in order to flush what is in the mount point to the actual storage device (the usb drive). You should always unmount before removing the device, just as in Windoze...
