USB headsets : can't get the mic to work ...

Hi,

I borrowed a Logitech USB headset to try voice VoIP under Linux.
I have never used these fancy things before so don't really know how to
proceed (using Breezy), I just improvised.

What I did is just plug the thing, and to my amazement, it was instantly
recognised, quite impressed. Then I went to System->Preferences->Sound,
where I changed the "default sound card" from the on-board sound chip to
the USB headset. I had to log-out/in for the change to take effect, but
I now have sound in the headset. Then I opened the volume mixer, and
went to File->Change Device, to select the headset. This gives me a
control for the headphones, which works (I can vary the volume), and a
control for the microphone.

That's where problems start... I launched the sound recorder to check if
it could record my voice using the headset, and it doesn't work, nothing
to be heard when I play back.

I tried with Dapper, and it's much the same in this regard.

Am I missing something obvious, or is USB headset support immature in
Linux ?

Any help/experiences gratefully received :-)

Regards,
