Hi Greg,
You haven't told us much about HOW you upgraded.  Did you change all
your apt source from Hoary to Breezy and then 
sudo apt-get update
sudo at-get dist-upgrade
or did you use a different method (e.g., via a CD)??
The slowness and freezing difficulties might be the result of conflicts
between libraries, incompletely converted.  Had you added software to
you Hoary box manually or from other Deb repositories??
You *might* be best off saving your config files and other important (to
you) files and doing a fresh Breezy install.
Or you might the method I mentioned above and run your upgrade that way
(assuming you haven't added significantly via other repositories.
