20Mbps is now the new norm for broadband over here. IT's available for
both Cable and ADSL. But for ADSL, it requires a new infrastructure, I
think they need to put new optical fibres all over the country. This
takes time, but over the past year, they connected most of the decently
sized towns (say above 50,000 habitants). My town has been connected
only recently, last month I think.
For the towns that are not yet connected, and therefore still use the
'old'/previous ADSL infrastructure, I think (having a quick look at some
ISP website here) the max speed we can get is between 2Mbps and 8Mbps,
depending on the quality of the phone line and how far your
house/building is from the ADSL facility. If you live in town center
then you would be garanteed toi get 8Mbps, but if you live 5kilomers
away, that will probably drop down to 2MBps.
20Mbps must be great (will not find out anytime soon, due to price.. 30
to 45 Euros per month !), as it lets you download an Ubuntu ISO image is
litterally just under 5 minutes !!!! At that speed, a netwtork may turn
out as fast than a CD install ! :o)
