Hoary Array 3 - Grub loader fails with "GRUB Loading stage1.5"

This happened to me with two different hoary-amd64 (array 3)
installations, and in both cases it worked after re-installing the boot
loader. The usual procedure to re-install the boot loader is: boot a
knoppix live-cd,  mount the hardisk partition containing your /boot
directory (for example "mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/hda2"), the reinstall grub
("grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/hda2 /dev/hda"). You can also edit
menu.lst if you wish.
