Installing a new DVD drive

Hi all,

I've just acquired an elderly DVD ROM drive, which I'm trying to install on
my Ubuntu machine.

HAL detects it correctly as /dev/hdd and I can both manually mount it and
play audio CDs with it.

What I'd like to know is how to add it to the automatic system so that it
is available straight away
in the Gnome desktop Computer->Discs. Do I need to manually edit fstab and
parts of the Gnome
configuration, or can I run part of the system setup tools to install it
automatically?

Neil

PS I appreciate that I will also need to download and install appropriate
codecs etc to be able to
play DVD movies; for the moment I'm just aiming to get the drive to show
up in Gnome from the off.
