I am also new to Linux so may I suggest the following:- Make sure you
are connected to the internet, Computer-> System Configuration->
Synaptic Package Manager-> Enter password-> Reload-> Mark All Upgrades->
Smart Upgrade-> Apply and carry on from there. If there any Upgrades
they will be dealt with automatically.

I hope that this is of help. Often there is no need to bother about
'consoles', 'repositories' and other Linux things.
