Nvidia and vesafb

If you do:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg 

go through all the questions (accepting defaults works mostly but
backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf - just in case)
When it asks for which video driver module - select nvidia
When it asks about frame buffer say no to not use it.

I think this will get you where you want to be
