i'm getting 33.something MB/s on my 40GB laptop drive...

you might want to check to see if your drive has been configured correctly...

google for linux driver performance and hdparm and you'll get
tutorials on how you can increase your drive speed by just using the
hdparm command.

be carefull as this command can trash your disk if used incorrectly.
