I had a similar problem two days ago, with a slightly different twist.
Seems that some package dependencies are not exactly fixed, and some
packages aren't simply available, or involve conflicting dependencies.
In my case (two days ago) there was a problem with the renaming of
libnautilus2-2 to libnautilus-extensions; seems like a few packages
still referenced the former, and via a long chain of dependencies,
gnome-desktop-environment wasn't available, and gdm, in particular,
was totally removed after dist-upgrade. I solved my problem
reinstalling onlye a few packages manually: gnome-core and a few
others. But it took me a good couple hours to figure out what was
going on. (I guess that's why they call hoary 'unstable', after all
:-)
