The GUI method.

In Ubuntu, using Nautilus, right click on any folder and choose "Create
Archive...". In the box that comes up, change the file ending
from .tar.gz to .zip as well as giving it whatever name you want (it
defaults to using the name of the folder it's compressing) and press
Create, that's more or less it.
