How to set up external video on iBook with Hoary?

I installed Hoary on a 600MHz G3 iBook.  I have read that with X.org
it should be possible to use the external video with the iBook.

After installing Hoary, I tried hooking up my external monitor.  I
don't get a "no signal message" so it makes me think some signal is
getting through, but although it is not pitch black, it is very dark
almost black.

What is needed to try to set up an external video with Ubuntu on an iBook?
