Perhaps you requested a "custom" install?  That's the only way that this can
happen without severe errors (and corresponding messages).

To get the complete set of desktop packages you are missing, install the
"ubuntu-desktop" package.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

(or use Synaptic)
