installing a new video card

What can I expect if I swap the video card? Is ubuntu going to choke
trying to start X, or will it discover the new card and try to configure
it? Is there a configurator that I will have to invoke manually in
console mode?

On a related note, how is X started on ubuntu? Is it tied to run level
5, as it is on RedHat? I didn't see a mechanism to start it in inittab.
It looks like there's some boot-time mechanism in
/etc/init.d/xfree86-common.
