Substitute for 'xv' image viewer?

IMHO, there is NO substitute for xv. Why don't you just compile it for
yourself? Or, failing that, surely someone has produced a ".deb" version.

I like xv because:

(especially for setting up a slideshow)
* it shows you the pictures, and *just* the pictures..
* ..but you *can* also pop up a GUI if needed to delete unneeded pics, etc
