mc inside gnome-terminal without accented characters!?

Yet one more problem with accented characters (öäü).
I'm not able to use öäü... within mc. gnome-terminal itself knows these
characters. mc doesn't allow to use this keys as input.
I've tried dpkg-reconfigure locales with de_DE.ISO-8859-1 (my default
after installation) and de_DE.UTF8. Both settings doesn't work for mc.
Instead, UTF8 comes with new (display) bugs. So I'm using ISO-8859- again.
Any hints?
