Recipe would be:
1) enable root OR comment Auth* lines in <Location /admin>
in /etc/[cups/]cupsd.conf
2) kill -HUP `pidof cupsd` (ah, right, OSX doesn't have pidof :/)
3) go to localhost:631
4) manually setup printer and for URI, type:
http://ip_of_server:631/printers/name_of_printer
5) don't use their printer manager tool
Now, if you would do this on Linux, people would say "that is totally
user unfriendly".
Problem is that, when OSX detects printer, it ignores PATH that server
sends (ipp://some.ip.add.ress:631/printers/name_of_printer), but instead
it uses it's own path (ipp://some.ip.add.ress:631/ipp/name_of_printer).
This way server returns 404 (you can check /var/log/cups/error.log on
your Linux box). Why did they change this in Apple? I don't know. As you
can see, this isn't a bug, this isn't a mistake. They knew what they
were doing. That's why I said di**heads. Yes, it is harsh, but those
guys and girls have to wake up and realize they aren't center of the
World or/and they aren't only people in the World.
