Well, configure-thinkpad seems to work fine in many cases. At least as 
long as APM is used instead of ACPI.

However, I haven't been successful to get it working on my T42p, for I 
am missing the /dev/thinkpad device. Well, actually I haven't bothered 
compiling my own kernel to get it working. But that's probably the way 
you'll have to take.
