Yeah I got it to work later. In the end it was mostly a reboot that
fixed it, although I always did depmod/rmmod/modprobe after a
compilation run. Rebooting shouldn't be necessary, but it worked. I
switched back to 0.19 (Ubuntu base) currently though, because the 1.0.6
broke so many things - I got quite a weird setup with a hacked
wpa_supplicant, ifplugd and ipw driver.
Just this morning I got a mail from the ipw bugzilla that might be of
interest of you:

The summary would be: The bug was somehow fixed, but exists again. I
guess they never applied the proposed fix to the CVS. The best bet is
to use 1.0.3 with the patch in Bugzilla, that worked well for me.
