Me personally, I prefer to do all such tinkering through
some sort of centralized place. Sort of like how I prefer to
install packages through Debian/Ubuntu rather than
installing them from source, if I can avoid it. I like to
reduce the number of places I need to look to take care of
something: I like to handle package installation and removal
via apt-get/aptitude/synaptic, I like to handle init-daemon
symlink removal via rcconf, etc. Give me one place for every
task I need to take care of. It's easier that way.
Your mileage may vary, of course.
