I'd look at your bios settings.  Laptop power conservation is so important 
that many laptop MBs have a bios which cuts power to the screen after a 
period of inactivity.  However, most such bioses allow you to set &/or 
disable this feature.

Guessing:  Your joystick is attached to the sound card?  Maybe a switch to USB 
would be helpful in getting the joystick movement recognised by the OS?
