System Restore

I have been looking at this Linux-Image-2.6.6.8.1-5-386 update (who
numbers this stuff?) afraid to "update" for quite a while.  Thinking
to myself - "What do I do if this screws up the machine?  What if it
breaks my sole internet connection?  Wonder if some update issue will
pop up on the list?"

I certainly do not know what the answer is and see no reason to copy
the "solution" other systems use but hauling out a command line
confuses me unless I have explicit instructions.  There is a rather
steep learning curve, even with Ubuntu, and any way of mitigating an
"oops" moment would be appreciated.
