mem test

Hi all, this may seem like a stupid question, but how long is a mem test
supposed to take(from the grub menu)?  I have 1Gb ram DDR-2 and I ran
the mem test, went to lunch and came back it had only done 4 passes.  I
have no idea if it is supposed to take this long, how long it goes for
and basically what it does.  Should it be done overnight?  Or do I need
to be there to watch for something?  Any summary or help would be
appreciated.  Thanks!
