If you go in "System ---> Preferences -- > Keyboard Shortcuts" you will get a 
  list all these shortcuts, and they can be changed to whatever you want.

Personally I find that assigning one keystroke per desktop works greats (F1 to 
switch to Desktop #1, F2 to #2, etc).  Then I just know that to get to my 
browser, I type  F1, my e-mail is at F2, etc.  (I started doing this after I 
realized that I never used the F keys for in any application).  I find it is 
less keystrokes than doing the Ctrl + Atl + whatever.

For the record, I use 6 desktops on my home machine (7 at work...)
