Well, I can second Abit boards under Linux. At work, it's standard
practise to test new hardware with knoppix - general stuff usually just
works. It's the new stuff (especially the cheap new stuff) that throws
up problems - that and half-arsed binary drivers compiled against
specific kernels.
Re Compaq laptops: 9010, 9005 and 9105's all work well under Linux, but
HP customer / technical support is appalling - there are better laptops
with clueful tech support and responsive customer service.
