Yes, I am rather disappointed with how little attention ZIP drives get
in Ubuntu. I gathered on this list, that things should improve for
Hoary, but I can't see any improvement at all. I am thinking of filing
"bug"/feature request in Bugzilla.
Problems with ZIP drive (a external parport one):
1) No mount point created during install
2) No entry in fstab
3) no appropriate module loaded (sg and ppa).
4) if you boot the machine with no disc in the drive, then insert a
disc, it won't mount. You have to "modprobe -r ppa" then "modprobe ppa",
to recreate the /deV/sda4 device, before you can mount the disc.
5) when you insert the disc, no nautilus windows pops up, despite the
settings in System->Preferences->Removeable Drives and Media
6) once mounted, the text/caption under the ZIP icon says "zip0" instead
of showing the disc's name/label, like CD's do, ont very informative nor
particularly good looking
7) when you right-click on the ZIP icon and select "eject", it unmounts
the disc, but it does not eject it, you have to open a terminal and type
"eject /dev/sda" to eject it by hand
I also used to have an internal IDE drive, and had pretty much the same
problems.
I hope Hoary+1 will cure all that :o(
On the other hand, with fancy things I was expecting problems with : my
old SCSI CD writer, everything was perfect - I didn't have anything to
do, everything was automatically set up and working 100% perfectly, a
true dream. So, I am sure our lovely developpers can sort point 1) to 7)
for ZIP drives... I have faith in them ! :o)
Then there is the SCSI scanner, that has no device created, and that
only works as root ! This too needs sorting...
