Boot problem on install

Hi all

I got an ubuntu cd in the post and and decided to check it out. However my
discovery is that it hangs just after booting the kernel.

I have a mecer M288+ laptop, dual booting with slackware and XP. I have
tried various boot options including 
noapic aolapic gdth=disable:y acpi=off noapci

I have never had a problem with Redhat or Slackware on these type of
laptops.. 

Anyone have any bright ideas what I could be missing here???
