fontconfig problems in hoary

fontconfig seems to be causing problems in apt with a recent 
dist-upgrade in hoary

if i run

sam at titania:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: fontconfig is broken or not fully installed

and if i run

sam at titania:~$ sudo apt-get install fontconfig
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
fontconfig is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.
Setting up fontconfig (2.2.3-4ubuntu5) ...
dpkg: error processing fontconfig (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 10

i am running hoary on a powerpc G4

hope someone can fix this
