kernel compiling question

Hello

I was trying to compile a kernel today, just to get rid of
CONFIG_PREEMPT, to troubleshoot some wifi driver.
Copied the /boot/config-2.6.10-5-686 to .config in my /usr/src/linux
pointing to linux-2.6.10 source dir, commented out the CONFIG_PREEMPT in
my .config file, make oldconfig, make bzImage, make modules && make
modules_install.
Copied the arch/i386/boot/bzImage to my /boot dir, edit GRUB. Tried to
boot on my new kernel... and nothing. Just a black screen.

Why?

I have looked at the ubuntu howto for kernel compiling, but the above
has always worked for me.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

fred
