kernel panic

Hi all I experienced the same problem
after an apt-get dist-upgrade. I was running from hoary sources
but there was some conflicts. During an apt-get dist-upgrade the
machine froze and I had to bring it down hard. After that I just get
kernel panic about not finding pivot_root. I fscked my boot partition
but still get thee panic and I found nothing in lost+found. I chrooted
from a knoppix cd to install a later kernel and maybe more recent
initrd-tools but to no avail. They install fine but on reboot still
get kernel panic.
I will upgrade today and see what happens. Anyone got any ideas why
this happened or a good website with a howto for exploring initrd ??
thanks
